Concessions for at home dialysis patients

Future water bills will bring some relief to at-home dialysis patients with a reduction in the amount they will pay for water.

In 2009, Cairns Regional Council increased their Special Water Rebate program to offer assistance to home dialysis users, increasing the concessional limit to 190 litres yearly.

Cr. for Division 3, Rob Pyne, said since the inception of the discount, it had become evident that dialysis patients required relief from water charges. “In order to help in the care of those in our community who depend on the medical assistance of dialysis, Council has reviewed the information and come up with a more accurate read of what is required for optimum assistance.”

Support has been calculated at six sessions per week on a usage of 274 litres per session. Potential recipients are required to apply for the concession by filling out an application form and lodging it with Council. Cr. Pyne said, “In an effort to reach all those who need the program, Council will provide application forms at Customer Service outlets and at the Cairns Base Hospital Renal Unit.”
