UNIT OWNERS CALL FOR FAIRNESS
Owners of strata-titled units have called for Cairns Regional Council to change the way it levies rates, so they are treated on the same basis as owners of the traditional, but fast disappearing quarter acre block.
Most unit-owners pay the minimum rate, which is currently $760.00. Currently this is the minimum rate for both units and residential properties. However, unit owners who are paying above the minimum rate find themselves paying a higher rate in the dollar than owners of houses.
Past years have seen former Douglas Shire rating categories brought into line with those of the former Cairns City Council to create a unified rating system. It may now be time to draw some of the categories together, so that there is greater equity in the system.
