Ports North have released their Annual Report for 2009/10 which is now also available on their web site. The report includes the following extract:

The State, “as part of its 2010-11 Budget, made a commitment to provide funding to support the Cairns Regional Council’s (CRC) construction of the Cairns Cultural Precinct to be located on Port Land owned by Ports North. In accordance with this commitment, the Queensland Government provided Ports North with a $31 million equity injection in recogniton of the fact that Ports North will enter into a long term lease with CRC for a peppercorn rental.”

A Council Spokesperson said, “Council continues to consult with the community on all matters unrelated to the site – which [unless the State changes its mind] has been finally determined.”

This is the situation, despite the disgraceful behaviour of some Councillors who voted for a recommendation that said the above port site was ‘ideal’ and that ‘welcomed’ the funding commitment from state and commonwealth governments but who now publicly declare they support alternative locations.
