‘CALANNA’ AND ‘TOM MURRAY’ PARKS

CALANNA PARK IN WOREE boasts a large oval, new playground equipment (see picture right) and is a home to Brothers Hockey Club.

The Park, located in Sondrio Street in Woree is named after the Calanna Family that used to farm sugar cane in that area years ago. The most well known member of the family is Mario Calanna who set up his first pharmacy on the corner of Toogood Road and Mulgrave Road in 1976.

TOM MURRAY PARK IN MOUNT SHERIDAN

Tom Murray Park fronts Hardy Road in Mount Sheridan.

Pat Murray and his family were one of the pioneering sugar cane farming in the south cairns. Pat’s son Tom Murray also had the farm in Mount Sheridan. The park is on part of where the family farm once was.

Tom’s son, also ‘Tom Murray’ was a long time teacher at Hambledon State School (now retired) and taught many of us who grew up in the Edmonton area.
