Mt Sheridan: Bill Mills Park Popular with Soccer and Volleyball of United Nations!

Bill Mills Park in Mt Sheridan is getting a lot more sporting use these days, as the below pictures show:

The park is home to the Hmong soccer team. Formerly based at the Leichhardt Club, the Hmong team have put in goals and marked the field. The Hmong community is significant in South Cairns, having grown in number over recent years.

The Hmong team from Cairns recently took on their Innisfail counterparts (see above) and often play the local Indian (Sikh) team. They also have a team in Division 2 of FNQ Soccer.

The other sport that has become popular at the park is, believe it or not “Volleyball”. It is very popular with a group of Pacific Islander residents who often play there. Unfortunately, facilities are in need of renewal, as the below picture shows:

With increased use comes increased demands on Cairns Regional Council and toilet facilities are now needed at the the park and the volleyball court needs some attention.

Demands for a skate park have been made as well, but no funding in that area has yet been identified.

  3. My son is 2 and a half he is wanting to play soccer, I just wanted to know if he is able to get into a team at this age

  4. Great article, would love to see more of the local migrant communities join the local leagues but the new Football Federation Australian Club Policy has banned the use of ethnic names, symbols and so on from club new club names preventing these teams from playing regularly and promoting multicultural participation in Cairns. Clubs like these are great for new migrants to meet friends, learn the local culture and to have fun each week… We’ll be releasing an article on our website (www.Queensland-SEO.com.au) next week on the recent 2014 Cairns Friendship Cup and with regards to our sponsorship for Far North African United FC…

  5. Here’s our article on the recent 2014 Cairns Friendship Games:

We hope more teams come on board next year and we’d like to setup a website for the annual tournament to help promote the games further and encourage participation and engagement within our beautiful community of Cairns.

Thanks Rob for your help with these smaller, lesser known fields that are essential for everyday use to our community and members…. 🙂
