ARCHITECTS behind a $25.6 million carpark tower in the Cairns CBD say the building fits in with the city’s new aspiration to look more like a rainforest than a concrete jungle.

A concept design has been drawn up for the six-storey structure, which will be built where Australia Post sits on the corner of Grafton and Hartley streets.

Architecture firm Conrad Gargett has prepared the concept design to tie in with Cairns Regional Council’s city centre master plan, which envisions a clean and green overhaul of inner-city streets.

According to Conrad Gargett’s report to the council, a residential or commercial tower could eventually be built on top of the carpark structure as demand for offices or apartments grows.

There is also potential to build a covered foot bridge from the parking station to the convention centre across the road.

Conrad Gargett’s design for the new carpark tower includes 569 places. vertical aluminium blades to conceal the cars parked inside the structure and provide a decorative facade for the building.
