Cairns Council Funds 2012 Events to Build Community and Boost Economy!
Two events celebrating the solar eclipse to occur later this year have been successful in gaining funding from Cairns Regional Council.
Council has allocated more than $150,000 to local events in the latest round of events grants.
Grants were awarded in three categories: Local Community Festival and Events; Developmental Events; and Major Events.
In the Major Events category, the Port Douglas Eclipse Festival and Port Douglas Solar Eclipse Adventure Marathon will each receive $40,000.
“There will be tens of thousands of people from all over the world coming into our region to witness the eclipse and two Port Douglas organisations have taken the initiative to put on major events to engage visitors,” Cr Schier said.
The eclipse could be the biggest thing to happen for our tourism industry in the foreseeable future and we want to give people a reason to stay in the region for as long as possible.
Also receiving funding from the Major Events grants stream is the Cairns Ukulele Club and the Cairns BMX Club, which will host the Queensland State Championships this year.
These two organisations have already proved their value by hosting well-attended and well-run events that attract people from outside the region.
Grants have also been allocated to community level events, which contribute to the liveability of the Cairns region, and to events that are expected to grow in the coming years.
“As always, there are many events that we could not fund this time around, but that does not mean we don’t appreciate their value to the community and to the region,” Cr Schier said.
Events and festivals allow us to celebrate our community and enhance our lifestyle and I congratulate the many individuals and organisations that work hard behind the scenes to make them happen.
