Nominate a local hero for an Australia Day Award!

Time is running out to nominate a local hero for recognition at the 2013 Australia Day celebrations.

Each year the Cairns Regional Council honours outstanding local citizens through the Australia Day Awards.

Nominations close this year on Friday 30 November, so please start thinking about who needs to be recognised in our community.

Cr. Rob Pyne said, “The Australia Day Awards give us a chance to acknowledge our unsung heroes.”

“These people give so much to our community and this is an opportunity to let them know their efforts are appreciated.”

The awards presented on January 26 will include Citizen of the Year, Junior Citizen of the Year, Cultural  (Arts) Award, Volunteer of the Year and both senior and junior Sportsman of the Year.

“The awards are in line with the National Australia Day Awards and are supported by both the Federal and State Governments,” Cr Pyne said.

“But, most importantly, these awards are to be presented to people who have been singled out by their own neighbours for their achievements and willingness to help others.”

Each recipient of an Australia Day Award will receive a certificate and bronze medal, to be presented by Mayor Bob Manning at the 2013 Australia Day Award Ceremony.
