The TFF Cairns opens with the new Australian crime drama Mystery Road, which had its world premiere on Opening Night of this year’s Sydney Film Festival and has since been selected for Toronto, London and Melbourne Film Festivals. In this astonishing andfocusonaustria-thumb mesmerising new film, writer-director Ivan Sen (Toomelah; Beneath Clouds) uses the conventions of the Western and the police procedural to create a uniquely Australian Outback Noir, complete with a most satisfying climactic shootout and performances from a stellar Australian cast.

David Jowsey, the film’s Producer, will join us in Cairns on Opening Night to introduce the film and take questions from the audience after the screening, followed by free drinks and nibbles at our after-party.

David had the following to say regarding the partnership between TFF and Mystery Road;

“Its a great pleasure being involved in the Sydney Film Festival Touring Program, to experience your film being played to film lovers around the country is a fabulous experience.”

Other impressive TFF Cairns titles include: The Act of Killing; a ground-breaking documentary that will chill you to the bone, was a winner at the Berlin, Copenhagen and Sheffield Film Festivals as well as a Sydney Film Festival Official Selection. Valley of Saints is an unlikely tale of love between a working-class boatman and a beautiful scientist; The Attack is the story of a successful Palestinian surgeon whose life is shattered when his wife is killed in a suicide bombing. For Those in Peril was an Official Selection at Cannes Critics’ Week and Sydney Film Festival, while Gloria won Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival for a bravura performance of an older woman falling in love. A Hijacking was an Official Selection at Venice, Toronto and Sydney Film Festivals; it’s a perfectly paced saga of a ship hijacked by Somali pirates that delivers a dynamic emotional payoff. Greta Gerwig stars in Frances Ha, a breezy and charming modern fable about a trainee dancer’s misadventures.
