Work to start on Cairns airport link to lake Street!

Construction will soon start on a second road link between the Cairns CBD and Cairns Airport.

CALL TO CONNECT LAKE STREET TO AIRPORT AVENUE

Site preparation works for the northern extension of Lake Street to join Airport Avenue have started with the installation of signage and delivery of fill material.LakeStextension.091255

The project will extend Lake Street by approximately 85m, creating a T-intersection at Airport Avenue.

“The objective of this road is to improve access to the airport! To avoid the road being used as a ‘rat run’ by Sheridan Street commuters, there will be no right turn from Airport Avenue into Lake Street and no left turn from Lake Street.

A new section of cycleway will be constructed concurrently along Airport Avenue and Lake Street, linking via a cyclist crossing function that will be included in the new traffic signals.

The road is expected to be completed in August 2014, weather permitting.

  1. I can understand Why Cook Highway/Sheridan street drivers would want to use it as a Rat run .
Sheridan street doesn’t carry a lot of cars but it sure has a lot of traffic.
Lake street and Grove street have gone missing for a year with the Hospital blockade .
Don’t the council want people to come into Town anymore?
