Cairns Festival Grand Parade a seasonal spectacle
Last chance to register as part of opening night convoy and be in the running for big cash prizes.
The countdown is on to get entries in for this year’s Cairns Festival Grand Parade and Fireworks. With $10,000 in prize money – not to mention the applause and cheers of 35,000 onlookers – it’s a perfect opportunity to promote your business, school, group or individual talent.
Entries close on Thursday 31 July, with participants encouraged to design floats to reflect the theme Spring in the Tropics.
A must-attend event on the Festival calendar, the Grand Parade signals in spectacular fashion the opening of the nine-day Festival. Starting at 5pm on Saturday 30 August, the parade weaves its way along the Cairns Esplanade to Fogarty Park. It will wind up in time to find a spot on the Esplanade to view the evening fireworks display.
Cr Max O’Halloran, Chair of the Community Services Committee, says a fantastic parade entry doesn’t have to cost a lot of money – it’s imagination that counts.
“A great example is last year’s overall winner St Joseph’s School, which used entirely recycled materials in their float. We also had plenty of walking entries, not to mention roller derby skaters, Chinese dragons and a procession of dogs.
“Cairns Festival is a celebration of our region and our tropical lifestyle, so I’m looking forward to seeing the different interpretations of the theme and the creativity that will no doubt shine through.”
Cash prizes will be awarded in four categories:
· $5,000 Best Overall Entry
· $2,000 Best Non−Motorised / Pedestrian Entry
· $2,000 JCU Education Category Best School Entry
· $1,000 Best Solo Entry
Judges will assess floats based on three criteria:
· How well the entry fits with the Spring in the Tropics theme
· Creativity and overall quality of the presentation
· Enthusiasm and spirit of float participants
