Time to Get Ready for upcoming cyclone season

As the cyclone and wet season approaches, residents are invited to learn how to prepare for a natural disaster at a series of displays and information sessions.

Cairns Regional Council will have an information display at Stockland Earlville from next Tuesday, providing assistance in preparing household emergency plans.

The display will continue for two weeks, in the lead-up to and during Get Ready Queensland Week (13-19 October).

“It’s during this time of year, before the cyclone season starts, that we should all be taking steps to prepare ourselves and our homes,” Mayor Bob Manning said.

“That means taking the time to think about the risks and making sure we have a plan in place to deal with any event that may occur.

“The display will include a variety of brochures, including advice in various languages, and will give visitors an idea of what to expect if they find themselves needing to take refuge in a storm tide cyclone shelter.

“There will also be a sample emergency kit featuring all the important items you should have on hand at home.”

Two free community talks will be held at the shopping centre to offer extra information, the first being on Thursday 9 October at 6pm.

Visitors will be asked to complete a brief survey that will provide a snapshot of how well prepared Cairns residents are for a disaster.

At Smithfield Library, the Living With Water project completed earlier this year will be displayed via touch screens.

“The interactive display presents the stories and recollections of people who have experienced flooding of the Barron River,” Cr Manning said.

“We hope that by sharing these experiences, others will gain an understanding of what can happen and, as a result, will be better prepared for the next flood event, whenever that may be.”

Rounding out Get Ready Week will be an open day at the Cairns Disaster Coordination Centre, offering insight into how the region’s primary operations hub functions during an activation.
